Prema Choir

with Kenter Davies

Each session we learn a new song. Songs will be released the week of the choir and music sent out to participants prior to joining!

For this choir at Prema, we’ll be singing “Bread and Roses”, a song of protest and women’s suffrage based on a 1911 poem by James Oppenheim. The song originated as part of the 1912 Lawrence textile strike, as immigrant women demanded higher wages and better treatment. The “bread” represents a fair pay for their labor while the “roses” represents dignity and quality of life. Arranged by Kenter Davies, we’ll dive into song and community together.

During our time together we will:

  • Play singing games to activate our voices, bodies, and connection to one another

  • Work through the song section by section, infusing some musicality as we go

  • Discuss the lyrics of the song and what meaning we can find in it

  • Sing through the song a few times in different formations and experience the music in unique ways!
